Artist Statement.

How do you see it?

Having dyslexia has its positive and negative aspects. The positive side is that I am able to create personal artwork which is meaningful to me deriving from the condition of dyslexia. The negative is that it is often difficult to read, write and express myself through verbal communication.
Dyslexia also makes me view imagery in a totally different and unique way and so this year, I set myself the challenge to explore for others the way in which I perceive the world.

I have explored a more meaningful way to express myself through my dyslexia in order to portray to the audience the way words appear to me whilst reading. And so, I have created different pieces to show the audience my experience of how I view reading materials.
Since reading, writing and communication are such a great challenge for me, I wanted to translate these challenges into my art work by using text to create pieces to demonstrate the difficulties I encounter on a daily basis. Through these works, the viewer is able to clearly understand the challenges I face when reading.
Visual stress is also a struggle in my everyday life. This is also a form of dyslexia which affects me in a number of ways. The text blurs, moves around the page and creates mostly circular shapes. And so these pieces are representations of what I see when reading books, magazines or short texts.
I have been able to use my dyslexia to my advantage and incorporate it into my art work. By overlapping, cutting and removing text in books, I have created an accurate depiction of my dyslexia. The use of video and photography has also played a significant role in my work as I am able to record and document myself reading to create a sound art piece which enables others to understand what I experience in day to day life. Through these techniques I have produced many pieces which demonstrate the significance dyslexia has on my life. This has not only helped others to understand this uncommon condition, but it has also enabled me to understand and appreciate the unique way I view my surrounding environment.

Contextualization.

  1. The Memo.
    http://www.thememo.com/2016/03/08/this-website-shows-you-what-its-like-to-read-as-a-dyslexic/
This has been written by Kitty Knowles. Dated March 8, 2016.

This is an article I have found through Facebook, which has made they own way of how people with dyselxia  struggle on a day to  day basics,  this show the audiences how dyslexia read in forms of text moving, misspelling words over and over again and also grammar mistakes.
  2.  Sam Winston.
Sam Winston has been my inspiration through this year, using his work has inspired me to create text pieces using my dyslexia as a focal point.

    p1.jpg
These are just a few images of Sam Winston work, and how he uses the method of materials he has.

  3. Ellen Bell.
    http://www.ellenbell.co.uk/drawings/drawings.htm

Using Ellen Bell as a inspiration to show the ways of placing my words onto the pieces of work. ideas of leaving the works on the paper as a relief of stuck right down.
Her use of book pages, deciding on old material pages or white, crisp, clean pages.
Her way of work make her pieces look 3D,  and shows a way that the words are coming out of the pieces.
I didn’t want this in my work because I want the shapes that I have created to show its own movement and so the words speak for themselves.

  4. Meg Hitchock

Text Drawings Created by Cutting Thousands of Letters from Books and Religious Texts

Meg Hitchock, has created a variety of different art work with text that have been cut out individually from assorted books including the Koran and Salmon Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses.
I have used Meg Hitchock as an inspiration because of the individual text but also because of the shapes. They are not exactly like mine, because mine are dyslexia forms but the way she has taken her time to do the shapes, and the way she has lined the text in a way that is all flows together gives it a sense of calmness, which is what I wanted to achieve.

  5. Ryo Shimizu.
    ryo-1
The text is formed by using strokes borrowed from Chinese characters and then restructuring them into letters of the Roman alphabet.
I really like how the words fall to the floor. I has inspired me to want to create bigger work and have them coming off the pages of pieces, to show a way of how my mind think about the struggle even when I am not reading the materials. Working big would show how big the struggle of dyslexia that some people might not understand and the way the work / symbols are moving away from the work shows the movement that I see.

Dyslexia Words.
Degree show Exhibition work.

20160505_174609.jpg
This is my final degree show pieces, all hung up and displayed in a triptych.
I used triptych method to create three pieces of art work that shows the movement of my dyslexia.
I used a white background to show my blank mind throughout reading and also how it goes my mind goes blank when I  read book, magazines and other materials.
I also wanted the text to be seen as part of the part ground, using any other colour would take away text and meaning that I wanted to achieve.
The three pieces show the stages of how my dyslexia and how it changes throughout my frustration and panic.
The first piece shows the frustration and panic before I even read in material, It shows how the text is moving before I continue to read.
The second piece shows the manic frustration and attention I have with the reading material, it show how the words are flying all over the page, like a sense of controlling the read material.
The last piece show a sense of calmness, how I have given up reading, I wanted there to be more blank space to show the audience how I have given up at this point and  blank ( white blank page) the words out.
Dyslexia word Close Up.

After spending a long time cutting and sticking the words from my favorite books and some feminist books that I used for my  dissertation to the paper to create a meaningful piece to me, I have taken a few photographs to shows the steps it took to help me create these dyslexia pieces.

Cutting out works and letter. ^ This was a very long process, getting all the word and letter cut out without coming the half the words and placing them in a particular way to make the dyslexic experience real.

Why I  didn’t use paper.
-Using paper was always want I wanted to use, because I wanted them to be as thin and fragile as book pages. However using the glue on them sometimes made the paper fold and made the paper bubble. So I invested in using thicker paper, that looked like paper but was strong and thick for the final outcomes. I looked at using mount board, which I was very lucky that I found something so early to work on, It was just what I need, strong, didn’t bubble when applying glue and looked had a great finish.

These pieces of art work I found that a just important as my degree show because they show how I begin to use this method of working and how it has become successful in my work.
These are the up coming pieces of work I have created that  have helped me create my final pieces for my degree show.
I wanted to show how different coloured paper can look on white paper, by applying different colours gives them more depth and become more interesting. however I wanted the piece to relate to my reading practice and wanted all the words and letter to be the same colour, I tried to use the same colour as the mount boards I was using to work on but I unfortunately I could not get the exact colour.

Using different colour text cut-outs and shapes. ^

Using different shapes with the same colour text. ^

These have helped me show that text in a circular way shows and represents my dyslexia more.
When I read books and other reading materials my dyslexia shows in a circular motion when all the word and letters form a circle. I have used this to my advantage to create pieces of work. my other piece of work which is leading up to the degree show.

This is a more stronger pieces to show how my journey was leading up to the degree show. This I what i wanted to use as inspiration for my degree show art pieces. however this was created on paper not mount board which I will be using to create my work on in the degree show.

Degree Show – Personal practice.

Exhibition Proposal.
For my exhibition I will acquire a few objects that will help me create the prefect way to show my audience the way I see words on paper and my spelling.
I would like a dark room for one person to stand in, sounds will be played around my audience to show the distraction I have whilst reading.
I will need a black room because I only want the audience to be surround my piece and sounds to show the difficulties of reading for me.
I would like a small screen (as small as a book) with reading materials on it, the reading material on the screen will be moving around in circles to show how I see text whilst i read (visual stress) whilst the distractions sounds and me reading will be playing quietly at first then the sounds will start to get even louder, as a way of losing temper, The a sudden stop.
To achieve this piece I will need a few weeks to paint walls, create surround sound and to create the book materials. cost of paint 50£, head phones, speakers, already have, small ipad, tablet could be lent.

I have decided not to display my work as a sound piece, I believe that the paper artwork speaks for its self in ways as the movement of the words, the way the text is flowing in a movement and the meaning behind the works itself.

What I wanted to use for my exhibition.
Degree show is a stressful time for everyone, playing what to use, make and show in the exhibition which will been measured and displayed as perfect as possible.
Before the exhibition it is a time where you have to think and decided what you wanted to work on for your exhibition. I didn’t want to work on paper because the glue makes the paper bubble. So I looked at many different artist that would help me learn and decide on what I wanted to use as a way of displaying in my exhibition degree show.

Rachael Ashe,Visual Artist Canada
Paper cutting. mixed media, altered books and photography

Rachel Ashe has used a paper cut-out method of working which not only is shown in  a 2D way whist lying down but it shows a 3D sculpture when she uses a certain lighting in different angles to create a shadow.
I am not using the cut-out method but I am looking for certain shadows which can be displayed with my  artwork.

With this piece I look more for the light aspect, I wanted to create the shadow that give a boarder around the piece. Plus I really liked the hanging, it is fragile and neat.
I wanted to use this method of displaying my work like these pieces. The light straight on these pieces give it more depth and more eye catching to look at. however the paper I have used are thicker and will not reflect the lighting.

The first idea I wanted was frame my work, using black frames to create a finished boarder.
Cao Li’s “Walk on Paper”
01-Exhibition-view-of-“Walk-on-Paper”However framing work that is so delicate and simple as my work could lose the meaning behind the piece all together.

My second plan was to show how fragile the paper was by holding it will binder clips and fishing wire.
I my art work to shake/ move to show the movement of the dyslexia words that I have create and for people to not be focused on one word in my piece.

photo-copy-3-587x438
However because my work is so large, it didn’t look right and unprofessional with the binder clips. I decided not to use fishing wire or binder clips but have them placed on the wall using another method because where the words are placed in my pieces of work, already show movement by the shapes its self and using another method of hanging and letting them shake might loss the whole pieces of art work.

So I decided to use Command no nail pads
41J9F0wii3L._AC_UL320_SR220,320_

Which are a none damage method that stick to the wall and hold up to 16lb of weight. before I stick command pads on I wanted the pieces of art to be move slightly off the wall to show a shadow. I used some form board and cut it to the same size as the command pads. I glues the form board to the art work then stick the command pads to the form board, this has given the pieces

Experimenting.

After my formative assessment, listening to a tutors feed back, I have taken into account of what they have said I tried other ways of using my pieces and expanding into other things .
such as.
20160508_203742 These we made a few weeks before and my tutors wanted me to try and rip them apart to show ripped pages, angry and frustration.
image

To me it feels like this has not worked, I think it is interesting and shows angry and frustration but I do not want to use this method of working in my degree show. I want to shows my angry and frustration but in a clean and calm way, shows show to the audience I do struggle in the subject but I am trying my very best to not show it and over come it in my own way.

Formative Post : Documentation.

1. Spelling words with fire.
image
Writing down words to me is powerful to show my mistakes through my dyslexia, however using another method to create another piece of work to also show my dyslexia.
I was using this method because I find it a struggle to writing and find it boring because of the struggle by writing using fire has shown my creative sign and help me gain more attention to spelling.
My dad challenged me words to spell which made it more challenging because my ability to spell Is also a struggle.

2. Dyslexia writing.
image
When you read normal text does the text go fuzzy?
No?
Try and read these pieces.
I have tried to relate the fuzziness writing to show my learning disability, to show my audience how I see the text I read.
3. Capturing dyslexia
image
Using the same method as the first team to experiment the way I see words when reading a piece of text.. they move around pages and move together as one word.
This is extremely difficult to read which I have shown in this piece.

4. Voice recording
( listening in person)

Read a a book called living dolls, natasha Walter.
This is a brilliant book and I have enjoined writing it.. however it has taken me long than more.
Listening and follow the recording of me reading. This shows the difficultly I have and shows my struggling throughout the book.

5.Dyslexic brain.

This is a piece to show the lack of expeirence I have with words using only one word .

Final Formative Post. Contextualisation.

  • Sam Winston.

Sam Winston, Is still one of the most inspirational artist that I am using in my subject module, He uses the same methods as myself, He uses text to create pieces of art work that relates to his dyslexia, which do I use my dyslexia to create art work. However I use a different approach to materials and process..

Lisa Kokin is a textiles artist, who uses words and other materials to create different art pieces, she creates words and sentences to creates a pieces that I can relate to using my dyslexia.  This one particular pieces she uses thread and a sowing machine to create a circle with words over lapping. Being dyslexic and reading books and writing, the sentences  move around into circles and the text move together, this pieces Kokin has made has inspired me to create circle in my artwork.

Circular motions.

When I read books and other reading materials my dyslexia shows in a circular motion when all the word and letters form a circle. I have used this to my advantage to create pieces of work. my other piece of work which is leading up to the degree show.

However I wanted to experiment with other materials such as paint with text on them.
I recently added a painting of what I have experimented with paint and text, but want to use the same materials and methods to create more to see how a triptych would look like.
20151127_134940.jpg
This was the very first painting using circles, dark colours to show the struggle of being dyslexic and words I cant no spell..

The triptych I then created.

DARKER TO LIGHT.
To show the struggles of the dyslexia.
I feel these three pieces work together, and shows the struggles and anger of being dyslexic however I feel that I can  bring back the book pages and create more pieces towards that method of working for my degree show.
